TOPPAN Digital has showcased its latest IoT solutions at LUXE PACK Monaco every year since 2019. Background and Aims

The beauty sector’s supply chain has become increasingly complex due to its multi-layered distribution routes from manufacturing to retail. This has prompted a need for mechanisms that facilitate real-time monitoring of products’ movements across supply chains that span the globe. Going forward, beauty and fashion brands will also be required to comply with the DPP regulations that are scheduled to be phased in for products sold within the European Union (EU).

TOPPAN Digital’s ID authentication solution using NFC tags can deliver a fundamental solution to these challenges. Integrating NFC tags into products adds a unique identifier to each individual item, enabling brands to satisfy regulatory requirements while also optimizing inventory and managing recalls efficiently.

Traceability and recall management solutions using ID authentication platform

By giving a digital ID to each NFC tag, the TOPPAN Group’s secure, cloud-based ID authentication platform delivers traceability from manufacture to sale, proof of authenticity, and consumer engagement. Linking the NFC tags of individual products to QR codes or UHF codes on cartons and pallets also makes it possible to update their status by scanning entire batches. This makes it easy to visualize store inventory and out-of-date products, and also to identify and promptly recover affected products in the event of a recall, dramatically enhancing the operational efficiency and transparency of the supply chain overall.

Smart packages with integrated NFC functions

Smart packages with integrated NFC functions fuse the TOPPAN Group’s packaging know-how with its NFC technology expertise. This solution eliminates the need for an NFC tag application process during manufacture and supports both design and functionality by integrating the tag into the paper-based structure without sacrificing packaging design quality. Making part of the circuit in the embedded NFC tag brittle ensures that it breaks if someone tries to remove the tag from the packaging, thus avoiding the risk of tags being fraudulently reused. NFC tags with an opening detection function make it possible to determine whether a package has been opened or not.

This tag maintains good communication performance even when attached to metal products, making it possible to introduce digital IDs for enhanced traceability and customer engagement to metal packages and components that have previously been unsuitable for NFC tags.

Super mini-sized NFC tags

Super mini-sized NFC tags with diameters ranging from 7 mm to 10 mm can be attached seamlessly to compact beauty products such as lipstick and mascara, giving each product a digital ID without negatively impacting product design.
